Nothing is permanent except change, the famous saying of a Greek philosopher applies to business and economy more apt than anything else. But along with the transitions that come in economic sphere, even the political system and the age old theories of governance vis-à-vis the welfare state are often put to test. Socialism has failed to usher in an egalitarian society. Marxism, the working class was told, would usher in a classless society. Now the top rung of the entire communist class in various countries – from China to India – do swear by various shades of Marxism but do not even mention a classless society.

In India, no such mention is made even in the election manifestoes. Instead, the left parties in India have gone in alliance with pro-capitalist and dynastic parties like Congress and even Hindu chauvinist BJP more than once. In 2004, they perhaps crossed all their unwritten boundary by helping to prop up a coalition government headed by the Congress party. Interestingly, the communist leaders appear proud to be counted among the ruling elite of the country.

CPlanned Economy
In India the Planned Economy has failed bitterly despite the hype over the stirring slogan ‘Garibi Hatao’(eradicate poverty). Now after 55 years of planned development approach and control of various economic assets, nearly 48 percent of Indian population is still under the poverty line. Economists would differ - though the country has traversed huge ground in the last 10 Plans that the Government of India and the Planning Commission have implemented. A staggering truth about India’s Business and Economy has been the bitter fact that the rich have become richer and we have also created a huge army of middle class. While the numbers of middle class and rich people have increased manifold, the conditions of poor have stagnated and at times – worsened.

The country has learned to take pride in growing number of billionaires and the mushrooming of Indian multinational corporations (MNCs), forgetting the fact that over 11 crore of children under the age of 14 (limit set by the founding fathers of the Constitution) still slog under sub-human conditions. The child labour menace is either forced by factory owners or due to compulsions of poverty. The childhood of millions of children are often abused even sexually. Are they really a blot on present day society? Perhaps even economists cannot answer this question.

Agro Economy
The Agricultural farmers continue to be another exploited class. The numbers of suicide keep increasing every year while reports of starvation deaths do also hit headlines. The syndrome has spread from Orissa to states like Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, which are otherwise doing well both in technology front and business economy. But when the agro working class are diverted and often misled into violence and mob fury by Naxalities, the economists and well to do class do not hesitate to dub the phenomenon as a ‘virus that has to be exterminated’. None other than the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said so. Naxalism is not a virus, but a symptom of wider malaise of exploitation of farmers, depriving them of their farmlands, by developers or the capitalists and MNCs who seek to set up Special Economic Zones (SEZs) on their land, without providing them alternate sources of living or farmlands to cultivate.

The Business and Economy is not professionally and as a result the vice-like grip of corruption in public life continues to engulf every branch of the society. It was not without good reason that the acronym BIMARU was discovered to denote ‘sickly’ in Hindi for states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Economists will not dare to challenge the argument that only exports from the states like Bihar are people --- a large army of economic and social migrants heading for a better life elsewhere but creating problems in those new lands of their discoveries like – Mumbai for instance. Reeling under unprecedented scale of immigrant influx from Bihar and UP, Mumbai is today angst in despair as its infrastructures are already under strains. And perhaps this is why the regional leaders swearing by parochialism are only fomenting communal and linguistic problems in the city, ironically the country’s commercial hub.

The economy of a nation is also driven by the economy of another. It’s more imperative in today’s world of global village. There are a few routes along which the state of the economy in one country can make an impact on the economy of another. Trade is the first one. If the prices of some goods go up in a country say the US and the country like India has no option but to keep importing it from the US, then these goods will cost automatically more in India. Similarly, financial route is the second way to influence one’s own economy by the changes and the systems of another country. This has happened with countries like Brazil.

Taking a holistic view, a recession like situation has come to prevail in USA. This has reduced US imports and raised its exports. Such is the nature of business and economic rules that this US-domination has already impacted India and some countries in particular in Europe. Economists do not rule out the proposition that more countries are bound to be affected in the near future. Lower import demand from the US lowers the aggregate demand in the countries those sell a significant proportion of exports to USA. Then there’s indirect effect. When there’s less US demand for goods from European countries, these countries will obviously reduce the production of goods exported to USA. In the process, production goods which are inputs for exports is also reduced. This is the process through which almost every country is adversely affected by US recession. This is particularly because that country has the single largest share of world exports.

Employment in Economy
The best way, it’s believed, to increase purchasing power of the population is to ensure that increasing number of population can join the purchasing force. This cannot happen without expanding employment net. But strictly speaking, employment alone is not enough. Employment in official statistics reveals something but it also hides a lot of things. The primary argument is that the employment figures do not reveal really the underemployment figure. Nor it can give any clear indication of employment-income relationship. Now what’s that when we discover that most household in developming countries like India and other Asian and South American countries are shown as ‘employed’ in official statistics books. Besides the employment shown do not quite reflect on the gainful employment – what the poor masses would strive to see. In Indian context, while the employment growth was shown a higher during 1999-2000 to 2004-05 than during the preceding five years. An estimated 47 million news jobs were created during that period but importantly a staggeringly high 87 million people remaining unemployed and a large number of them underemployed is never told in the statistics books.
