Science
The beginning of science in human history is linked to the time when men first discovered fire by striking of two stones. The human life and the science in and around it have undergone a sea change since then and what the human being has achieved today was purely unbelievable even hundred years back. The scientific inventions have revolutionized the life on the globe effecting even plants and animals besides the man himself. They have brought about remarkable changes in our ways of living and made the world – definitely – a better and happier place to live. Well, this could, however, be debated!
Science has made our domestic life comfortable. The invention of Gramophone , Radio, Cinema and Television has added to our pleasure and made life interesting.
Science has reduced human labour. It has invented various machines for different kinds of job. Thanks to science, there are machines to sweep and cook for us while electric fans and coolers protect us from heat of summer. But nevertheless, there was a time when people also did debate whether machines were making men jobless.
Perhaps such debates on the merits of science and the host of disadvantages posed by it will go on till eternity.
Among other positive contributions of science, it has increased agricultural and industrial production. Man is now able to predict the weather conditions and make cultivation plans accordingly.
Similarly, telegraph, telephone, wireless and the latest craze of Internet have rendered communications easier and something at the speed of a button- which was unthinkable even a quarter century ago.
Similarly, railways, aeroplanes and steam ships have brought the countries of the world closer to one another. Today’s concept of global village, as we understand by the term, owes its origin and survival mainly to science and the many feats of achievements man has made in revolutionary space like Information Technology, communications and overall global security.
Science has worked wonders in the fields of medicine and surgery. Today man is able to fight death literally. Even the killer diseases are given a stiff challenge and medical practice like blood transfusion has able to help men live longer despite suffering from onetime killer disease like cancer. It has given eye to the blind, ears to the deaf and legs to the lame. Science has checked and cured terrible diseases and lowered mortality.
Even in countries like India, the mortality rate has gone down by leaps and bounds. A country, onetime known as a land of snake charmer, today is a nuclear power, self-sufficient in most needful items of modern day life. As against what was 60 years back when the country became independent; not only the life span of man and woman have gone up, even a new born child’s survival percentage has increased manifold.
Still more amazing are the achievements and feats of glories of science in the modern world. It has invented rockets and space ships and landed man on the moon.
It has given him artificial lungs and prolonged life.
The benefits of science today touches every sphere of human life and cuts across national and caste or colour lines. Yet, science is also known for certain ugly contributions.
It has also invented some deadly weapons of war and put man against man like never before. A few such examples are hydrogen and the atom bombs, poisonous chemical gas and rockets which readily pose a constant threat to human life and civilization.
Japan has already paid the deadly price of the devastating atom bombs hurled on it during the second world war. The twin cities of Japan, Hiroshima and Nagasaki still live with the brunt of human anger manifested in the form of bombs.
However, man has not stopped from making abuses of science and its power. The poisonous gas was in play during the first spate of Gulf war between the Americans and the Iraqi forces of the now deceased leader Saddam Hussein.
Human beings are still unmindful and practically every country is now fighting it out to make nuclear bomb. The reconciliation steps taken by world body United Nations (UN) has helped little.
Even those countries who were not developed or self-sufficient are going for nuclear programs often after getting the missile technology smuggled from one country or the other. Take the instance of countries like Pakistan, North Korea and Iran. The refrain, however, is that they also need nuclear power for meeting energy needs.
India too has gone nuclear in the year 1998. The Hindu chauvinists BJP makes it a point to claim nuclear program as one of its principal achievements though the work on it started long back.
Ironically, the man who is said to have the credit of making the country’s nuclear bomb Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was decorated with Bharat Ratna and later also made country’s President.
All the same, the peace and security of the world depend on our use or abuse of the scientific inventions.
Death of Ethical and Moral Reasoning
Another damaging and long lasting impact left by science, rather unfortunately, is bringing an end to ethical and moral standing. The reasoning has found so much prima facie that people have developed an abhorrence of moral and value-based standing. The fear of God has gone making man see scientific reasons in everything. And in the process, he has also given up any fear of punishment and reprimand of wrong doings of high order. Man now believes that he can get away with any sort of crime – provided he is smart enough to hide his deeds, camouflage it with certain coverings do-good-work and at the end bribe people concerned who can catch him.
These have brought the debate back on whether really science has really helped man to live a happy life or nor.
Popular scientists
Some popular scientists human kind has seen include: Newton, Albert Einstein, Archimedes, Pascal, Wright brothers, Thomas Alva Edison etc.
Archimedes is said to have given a special theory of solid body able to flow in a water pond. Einstein gave his famous theory of relativity. Edison gave us the electric bulb while Wright brothers discovered the air-plane.
Another scientist worth mentioning is Stephen Hawking for his famous book ‘A Brief History of Time’. Hawking is also said to be new generation’s scientist.
IT Revolution
Bill Gates is another striking light whose contribution vis-a-vis computers and IT revolution has changed the way human kind used to think. His contributions will have the impact for thousands of years to come.
IT revolution also gave a few scientific equipments of far-reaching consequences. These include computers, laptops, mobile phones etc.
Thanks to the technology era, computers have also become entertainment boxes with children able to play games, cine lovers enjoy movies etc.
Among the Indian scientists, Jagdish Chandra Bose and C V Raman will be remembered for long. Bose made his contributions in botany and told the world about the life of a plant while Raman is more popular for his Raman Effect findings in Physics.
