Kids & Teens:
Human life is divided into three stages that is - Childhood, Adolescence and Adulthood. Among these Childhood and Adolescence
period are the most important stint in one’s life In other words , we can say these periods are crucial as character and
career moulding period.
The childhood period is from 0 to 12 years of age and is considered the most vital period
in the life of an individual. The Kids stage is like a blank paper in which anything and everything can be written if proper
care is not taken to mould his or her life. Therefore,
parents and elders need to be more than careful in bringing up a child.
There are several factors those influence the upbringing stage of a Kid and his future life. Family, Society and the School
for school-going children play immense role in shaping a kid’s life. The role of parents remains crucially important because
it is the Kids stage when children can be given positive traits and other needful qualities of a good virtuous life.
Society equally plays its role because the kids stage is also vulnerable to be influenced by factors other than family like
the surrounding of the place where the kids resides. Similarly after three years of age they are influenced in classroom and
their schools when a Kid comes in contact with several other Kids of the same age group in the school .
If the environment of the school is healthy and value-based then the Kid can also develop these positive attitudes.
Delinquency is an important aspect of a child’s life as several factors like negligence of parents and
unhealthy atmosphere in society or school can put in a number of negative qualities in the child. Vices like telling lies,
stealing, unnecessary nervousness or aggressiveness which can have long-lasting adverse impact in their life do happen during
this period. Experts and those specializing in childcare say that even unbridled love and care can lead to delinquency among
children. Though it is often debated about the pros and cons of using harsh manners like beating or punishing children, the
old school of childcare had their reasons to discover the phrase : ‘Spare the rod and spoil the child’.
However, corporal punishment in schools often make news these days and is also considered an anti-thesis to the theory and
practice of bringing up a modern child.
Toys and child care:
Toys for children have been around for ages and are as much a part of growing up as mother’s milk. They are a part of
pampering, a display of parents love, a part of birthday celebrations and friendship. But recent times have shown that toys
are not all fun.
China made toys:
The recall of over 18 million China made toys in the US because of excessive amount of lead paint shows that there are hidden
dangers lurking in toys. In India also studies have claimed that alarming levels of lead and cadmium are used for toys made
in cities like Delhi and Mumbai. Since a large number of cheap PVC toys are imported into India or are made din the informal
sector with little or no quality control, it is vital to examine that strict standards are set for the content of lead and
cadmium used in their manufacture.
Sports – A Quality needs to be encouraged:
Gone are the days when all play and no study could make Jack a dull boy. The sports psychologists say that sporting children
need a lot of care to keep their interest in the game they play or love to play in younger age alive.
In case the parents find the child’s interest waning, then they must find out why it is happening. They must not just neglect
the entire episode and heave a sigh of relief that the child has given up sports and thus will be more dedicated towards
studies.
Parents must examine whether the loss of interest for sports in a child has come due to factors like the coach or the
teacher/instructor being too harsh?
Is the focus only on competition and trophies?
Is it the long duration of practice that is responsible for the declining interest of the child? Or is the interest in games
and sports is eating into the child’s time to study or relax?
It ought to be noted that there has to be some reasons for sure and thus corrective steps should be taken.
If the problem is the coach or an emphasis only on medals, then the child should be withdrawn and put in another sporting
club/ class which is less competitive than the school level or privately run coaching classes. In a freer environment there
are far better chances of the child blossoming into a good sports persons as there is no tensions of winning and only
winning.
Please remember, children by nature want to play, but not all want to play in fiercely competitive circumstances .If the
child doesn’t like the stress of competition, he should be taken out of it and be led towards a more non-competitive
activities like trekking, biking, swimming or running. Studies have shown that such initiatives have shown positive
results.
Tune into the child’s developmental level and encourage a sporting activity that he or she can cope with. For instance, for
children between the age of five and ten a programme should concentrate on helping children improve their individual skill
level, whatever that level may be.
Kids want to be able to do something that they haven’t done before. It’s a natural instinct and they want to emulate their
sporting heroes . They will often dream of hitting a cricket boundary , dribbling a football , swimming the length of the
pool or playing tennis the way their favorites Sachin Tendulkar or Sania Mirza do. For them such thoughts are exhilarating.
That is a very positive sign.
Adolescence period :
A child in the age group of 13 to 19 years are called teens. This is the most sensitive time of a child’s life. During this
period, the life of a child is most vulnerable to be misguided or fall into wrong hands and companions. During this time they
are neither kids nor adults and they hover between two stages of life. Physically and mentally many changes are apparent in
them.
Due to hormonal changes they become emotional and attracted towards opposite sex.
This is also a period of career-building period as exam pressure mounts and knowingly or otherwise parents also start
expecting lot from them. From good results to learning good behaviour, helping parents in household chores, shopping etc.
The most important task in this stage is to give them proper guidance. Otherwise they will be misguided by anything. As they
are not mentally fully develop whatever they see in television or films or hear from other thinks to be practical and get
influenced radically.
As in the case of kid stage, here also family, school and society play important role.
Family: The role of family is very vital .Parents should now treat them as friend and try to share all their problems
emotionally and otherwise. Healthy environment is utmost essentially in home, otherwise teenagers are bound to seek happiness
in outer world which may be harmful in the long run.
Schools/Colleges: Atmosphere of school and college play important role in the life of teens. Good education helps in their
career –building. This is also the time when chosing of friends, the kind of books they read, the films they see help make or
unmake their life and career.
Society : The surrounding environment also have impact on teens mind and behavior. He starts imitating the persons he thought
to be best, attractive unmindful of the vices the person may have.
Experts say, among these three factors the most important role is of parents .Teens are unable to understand many things.
Proper guidance is required and as it is also career –building period, the responsibilities of parents also increase manifold
.
They have to know the psychology of the teens and accordingly guide them. They should discuss each and every matter freely
with them.
It’s in this context, the modern school of education strongly makes a case of introduction of sex education in a developing
society like India.
We find many crimes are committed by the teens. It is primarily because they are unable to justify their act or often act in
frustration. There is also a tendency to show heroism to make a mark among friends and by that they do end up doing
something grave.
Delinquency is the major and serious problem of this age. Some busy couple are unable to look after there teen child
.Ultimately the sought their happiness in friend-circle and if friend –circle is not good than they indulge themselves in
different anti –social acts such as stealing , robbery , murder , sex crimes etc .
